We’re quickly approaching the kickoff of the holiday season, complete with gatherings, parties, stress and so much more! With all of this on the horizon, we have good reason to beef up our alcohol collections to ensure we’re always well-stocked for anything that may arise (both planned and unplanned!).
It may seem silly to include “stocking up on libations” on your to-do list for holiday prep, but it’s actually quite important if you’re one who likes to gather and imbibe. Or likes to imbibe solo. We’re not here to judge; we’re here to keep you comfortable.
Think of it like this: You’re curled up on the couch on a frosty Friday night, enjoying a movie or reading a book when suddenly…the doorbell rings. It’s your in-laws and Uncle Frank. They just “happened to be in the neighborhood” even though they live 2 towns over. Now, whether you were enjoying a glass of something strong when they arrived, or not, you’re going to start wishing you had something in your hand at that moment. This is where your well-stocked bar comes in handy!
Your mother-in-law wants a glass of cabernet while Frank wants a scotch on the rocks and your father-in-law wants a “simple” dirty martini (but you know nothing is ever simple with him). You smile on the inside, knowing you’ve got just the thing for each of them because you read this article and anticipated this exact moment. Expertly, you serve them each the perfect beverage while crafting your own (very strong) concoction to enjoy. Your mother-in-law raves at how prepared you were while also pretending there’s nothing wrong with “popping in” at a time when cell phones exist. Life is good.
Now, let’s discuss how we can make sure this is your story this holiday season. From alcohol to mixers to garnishes and glasses, we’ve got all your bases covered!
Alcohol
● Scotch, Bourbon or American Rye Whiskey
Having at least one of these on hand at all times is very
handy. Their versatility makes them a forever crowd-
pleaser, and allows for everything from a simple pour
on the rocks to the most complex cocktail.
● Vodka
This is such classic, versatile alcohol to keep in the
kitchen. We recommend choosing something a bit more
“top-shelf” for the most smooth pour possible. This will
ensure a delicious cocktail every time.
● Gin
Cocktails love gin, and gin loves cocktails. It’s a classic
staple in every bar and can bring a new life to even the
most simple drink. Keep this guy around for creative,
flavorful drinks any time of the year.
● Rum
Whether you’re looking to sip or mix, keeping at least
one type of rum in your home bar is crucial. From dark
to coconut to white, you simply can’t go wrong. Having
rum around allows you to elevate sodas, punches, and
everything in between.
● Tequila
Yes, tequila feels summery, but it doesn’t have to!
Sipping on a nice pour gives warmth to even the
coldest night. However, even in the wintertime, a
Paloma or Margarita can also be the perfect fit.
Mixers & Garnishes
Don’t underestimate the inherent magnificence of having
mixers and garnishes “just laying around”. No delicious
cocktail is complete without them! Here are our suggestions:
- Bitters
- Club Soda
- Cherries
- Lemons
- Limes
- Olives
- Oranges
- Sweet & Dry Vermouth
- Simple Syrup
- Tonic Water
Glassware & Tools
You don’t have to go to extremes in this regard, but there
are some things that are ideal to keep around.
Tools:
● Cocktail Shaker
● Jigger
● Bar Spoon
● Small Knife
Glassware:
● Wine Glasses
● Martini Glass
● Highball Glass
● Champagne Flute
